How a piece
comes to life
The brief
You describe the space: room dimensions, mounting point, existing palette, lighting intent. No template to fill. A few targeted questions, usually resolved in two or three emails. Most briefs come down to: "here's the room, here's the mood, here's a reference."
The render
Within five business days we return a photorealistic 3D render. Your piece, in your space, to scale. Revisions are included, and nothing goes into production until you've approved the form.
Production & delivery
On deposit (50%), production begins. Pieces are inspected at each stage, finished by hand, and functionally tested before shipping. Worldwide white-glove delivery, fully insured. Progress photos at key stages so you're never left wondering where it is.

We don't work from a fixed menu. The filament we recommend depends on what you're trying to achieve and part of the brief conversation is understanding that before anything is modelled.
Most pieces use a recycled PLA base: it holds fine detail, takes colour well, and has a matte warmth that reads as considered rather than industrial. For clients who want something that feels closer to stone, we work with calcium carbonate composites that sand to a dense, marble-like surface. The weight and opacity change the character of the piece entirely. For a warmer, more organic register, wood-fibre filaments produce a grain-like texture under finish that no paint or lacquer can replicate. Outdoor and high-heat installations typically call for carbon-filled PETG, which prints in a deep structural black and handles temperature ranges a domestic pendant never sees.
Finish follows filament. A raw PLA piece and a marble-composite piece sealed the same way will feel like different objects, because they are. We discuss this during the brief: whether the surface should read as matte or have a slight draw, whether the layer lines should be visible as part of the texture or sanded back entirely, whether a wax-buffed finish or a resin coat better suits how the piece will be lit and used.

Is 3D-printed lighting structurally safe?
Yes. All Ilumo pieces are inspected at each production stage, electrically assembled in-house, and functionally tested before shipping. We carry full product liability insurance.
How durable is PLA?
Interior-grade PLA sealed with our resin finish resists UV discolouration, humidity, and temperatures up to 55°C / 131°F. Well above the ambient temperature of any light-bearing room. The material won't yellow or crack under normal domestic use.
Can I request a specific colour?
Yes, as long as the filament is available in that colour. Our standard palette covers a wide range and comes at no extra cost. For exact RAL or Pantone references, we work with a custom-blended filament. That process typically adds 1–2 weeks to the lead time and a sourcing fee we'll confirm before you commit.
Do I need an electrician?
Pendants and sconces require an electrician for hardwiring. The piece arrives with standard-spec wiring and a canopy plate; your electrician needs no specialised knowledge. For table and floor lamps, plug-in versions need no installation at all.
What's your returns policy for bespoke pieces?
We iterate until you're happy with the render before production begins. Once in production, cancellations are not possible. Defects and damage in transit are covered at no cost.
Do you work with architects and designers?
Yes. Around 40% of our bespoke work comes via the trade. We offer a trade programme with priority lead times and volume pricing from 3+ units. Send an enquiry and mention your practice in the brief. We'll set up a trade account from there.
Can I base a bespoke piece on an existing work?
Absolutely, and it's often the fastest route. The parametric model is already built; we adapt scale, openings, material, and finish to your brief. These pieces typically cost 15–20% less and require fewer render rounds.
Is shipping insured?
Yes. All pieces ship fully insured with a specialist art and fragile-goods carrier. Customs documentation is included; import duties are the client's responsibility but we pre-fill all paperwork.
